The origin of the challenge coin

Portrait Medal

Challengecoins were also known as "portrait medals" during the Renaissance and were usually used to commemorate specific events involving royal families, nobles, or other types of wealthy individuals. Medals will be given as gifts or rewards, and people will exchange them with friends and colleagues. The most common format is that one side depicts the patron, while the other side displays something representing the individual’s family, house, ancestry, and/or seal.

The origin of the challenge coin

The challenge coin originated in the First World War. Before the United States entered the war in 1917, American volunteers from all over the country filled the newly formed squadron. Some wealthy descendants studied at universities such as Yale University and Harvard University, and they resigned to participate in the war in the midterms.

In a squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered a medal made of pure bronze and presented it to his troops. A young pilot was trapped in another country from being executed because of this medal but gave him a bottle of wine.

Going back to his squadron and ensuring that all players carry their medals or coins at all times has become a tradition. This is accomplished through the challenge in the following way: the challenger will be asked to see the medal, and if the challenged cannot produce the medal, they will be asked to choose to buy drinks for the members who challenged them. If the challenged member shows the medal, then the challenged member needs to pay for the drink. This tradition continued throughout the war and many years after the war, and the surviving squadron members were still alive.

The tradition of challenge coins has spread to other military units, all service departments, and even non-military organizations and the U.S. Congress. The U.S. Congress produces challenge coins for members of Congress to present to voters. Today, challenge coins are issued to members as a morale-enhancing reward when joining the organization and sold to commemorate special occasions or fundraisers. In the Air Force, military training instructors issue pilot coins to recruits after completing basic military training in the U.S. Air Force, and award new officers coins after completing the Air Force Officer Training School.
