Pattern making process from flat to three-dimensional

The pattern design work begins with the artist’s graphic drawing, and turning the graphic pattern into a beautiful and realistic three-dimensional relief on the coin requires a complicated process:

(1) The engraver uses oil to express the graphic pattern on the drawing in three dimensions. And then turned into a plaster mold or resin mold;

(2) Put the plaster mold or resin mold into the electrolyte, and electroplate it to form a copper mold blank with a convex pattern, also called a copper mold or a master mold;

(3) Pass The stylus on the engraving machine and the engraving knife is simultaneously swiped and the three-dimensional pattern on the master mold is reduced and copied to another metal mold blank according to the established ratio. This forms the original mold, also called the sub-mold, and it is surface relief. The effect is the same as that of the actual coin; (4)After the original mold is quenched to increase the hardness, another mold blank is repeatedly stamped on a large tonnage hydraulic press to form a working mold with a concave pattern and a mirror effect, and then the working mold Quenching increases the hardness for use in embossing.

An original mold can be used repeatedly and stamped into many working molds with the same pattern. This is why some military coins with the same pattern can be produced all year round without interruption. It should be said that the new molding process is not only more standardized but also greatly improved inefficiency. It allows the former skilled engravers to spend a whole day to complete the work in a few hours.

The previous working mold may only be able to imprint a few hundred coins, but the current working mold can imprint millions of coins. The modern coin minting machine is a precise and efficient equipment system that integrates imprinting and automatic transmission. It continuously accurately places the blanks on the imprinting position at a very fast speed and the punching can be completed instantly, so every minute. As many as hundreds of coins gush out.
